It is significant to understand the complexity of bead history. Beads were used as adornment dating as far back as 30,000 years. They have been used as a representation of social position, political office, marriage status, and wealth. Beads have also been used as a form of currency.
Indigenous people used beads in trade. The most famous groups were the Africans and Native American Indians. Prehistoric individuals made the first beads with many different supplies. Some materials that were used include: bone, seeds, shell, stone, or other objects found at hand. What ever stood out as easily accessible and abundant in the respective environment was a top choice.
The most distinguished use in history was the use of beads in trade for slaves. African Kings and other merchants along the coast would trade slaves that they had captured from inland tribes. The slave traders would trade for glass beads that were created by the Venetians, Dutch, and Bohemians. In some cases beads were purchased for trade from the Chinese.
Hundreds of pounds of beads were stored in the holds of merchant ships when leaving their homeports. This weight was used as a balance to keep the ship on an even keel. After going through the process of trading, the beads were replaced with goods or slaves.
Beads also carried great spiritual significance by numerous tribes. These beads were used as prayer beads in religions all over the world. Muslims, Buddhists, and Catholics were the most popular religions to use prayer beads. While these beads have been normally made out of common materials, it became very common for the wealthy to make elaborate beaded rosaries as a sign of stature. It is through this value and attachment that beads have remained in existence and are a large industry.
