Making the choice on selling gold jewelry is a hard one. So you should be able to make sure that your gold jewelry is real. But how was I going to make sure that my jewelry was genuine and not just fake costume jewelry? Taking my gold pieces from store to store, trying to get it checked out, was just not an option that was attractive to me. I need some extra money fast, so I needed to be sure that it was not fake before I tried to sell it.

Have you ever heard of the magnet test? You won’t have to run to the hardware store for this test.

The first test that you need to do is to try out the magnet test. This test is easy and here is how it works. First of all, precious metals like gold and silver are not attracted to magnets. Or another way to say it is they are not magnetic. But steel is magnetic. But be wary of this test. It will sometimes yield a false positive.

But where are you going to find a magnet for this test? Head to the kitchen. Why the kitchen, because you probably have some refrigerator magnets in there. This type of magnet should work great for most people. But if you have some of the cheap plastic type, they may not be strong enough.

Look for a Hallmark stamp. This is generally a foolproof method.

The hallmarking of jewelry has been around for centuries. Most of the time genuine gold jewelry will be marked with the karat stamp. For example, most jewelry is either 14K or 10K gold. Sometimes you will find 18K gold in men’s and women‘s jewelry, but most of the time, that purity of gold is just to soft for jewelry. Look on the clasp of necklaces for the hallmark. If it’s there, then you probably have genuine gold.

Hallmarking generally relate to the purity of the gold that you have. For example, 14k gold is 58 percent gold. How do I know that? Just take 14 divided by 24 and you get .583. Move the decimal place by two points and you have the percentage of 58%.

Figuring out where to sell gold jewelry is very important if you want to get the most money that you can for your jewelry.
