RingI actually feel for any guy that is tasked with picking jewellery out for his loved one. Having just gone through the process I know how complicated it is to choose just the right style, the best design, and as for the 4 C’s (color, carat, clarity and cut) wow, it’s a completely new sphere of terms!

Getting engaged is a wonderfully exciting time for any man, but their is so much custom, so many things to consider. Come on, how far do you go? Do you approach the father of the bride first? Do you pick the engagement ring or wait and do it together? There’s a blending of traditions and roles that just create far more confusion in the entire process.

However it’s about marriage and spending your life together, but the engagement ring is a large deal. Men just don’t get trained in this stuff. I never had the benefit of studying gemology at college, or for that matter, customs and traditions of the wedding process. Faced with the decision of popping the question brought with it waves of advice from elders, friends, even co-workers not to mention store staff!

Anyway, so I’ve made a decision to pop the big question and I am going to be bold, I am going to buy the engagement ring without checking with my future bride. Come on, how hard could it be … it is just a ring.

Sure this can spell a disastrous wedding, I almost certainly should have stuck with buying the tiara instead of a ring, but with enormous naivety I’ve started on the retail journey. Visiting jewellers and retailers all enthused to serve and suggest why their jewellery is so much better than the following one. But having trundled thru store after store I found it looked more and more the same.

Until I walked into a local antique dealer – this was not just another gold ring with a diamond, this was a collectable, something that would actually improve with age, who’d have thought I could pick an antique engagement ring. A brilliant stroke! Well, that and some absolutely fantastic shop staff.

Yes, she’s now my spouse and, in fact , we now have kids. The antique ring is still a prized treasure and really reflected the uniqueness of my wife.

Finding the right jeweller, the right antiques dealer is made way easier when you look in dLook, Australia’s online advertising directory.
